Students at De La Salle College continue to live the Lasallian Values on a daily basis and some of the recent projects to highlight these principles include, book donations, exploring friendship and celebrating International Men’s Day.

Students at De La Salle School, St Helens, had a busy time in the run up to Christmas as the 1719 Society and SVP held a first pensioner’s party, while there was also a very successful school play.

Students at St Illtyd’s Catholic High School in Rumney continued their development and learning with a wide range of activities over recent months, including looking after the environment, embracing reading and reflecting on an adventure break.

St. Benildus College celebrated our annual Lasallian Week from Monday 5th December to Friday 9th. The week recognises and celebrates the life and work of St. John Baptist de La Salle and across the week students and staff celebrate and emphasise the five Core Lasallian principles in our daily school life.

The District of Ireland, Great Britain and Malta, along with the global Lasallian Family is mourning the loss of Br. Tim McLaughlin, of the Miguel House Community in Castletown, who passed away on Wednesday January 11th.

We are sad to report that on January 4th, 2023, Brother Terry Kay died following an illness over Christmas. He’d lived at St Cassian’s Pastoral Centre, Kintbury, since 2014 and had previously lived in the community as Vocations Director from 1992-1995.

The Lasallian Values were evident in Castlebar Primary School as students visited and donated to the local social services, while they also celebrated Christmas by taking part in Christmas plays.

The team at Castletown Pastoral Centre returned after the Christmas break, refreshed and renewed and ready to welcome groups once again.

At Dublin Retreat Centre 2023 has kicked off busy with a full menu of retreats in our first four weeks. We have had some special moments already, with earnest sharing, reflections and discovery.

Students at De La Salle College Macroom, embraced the Lasallian Values before Christmas as Transition Year students involved in the annual Macroom Charities Appeal before Christmas.

Students from St Margaret Ward took part in a day Retreat to help give them the skills and knowledge to lead Collective worship and prayer in school. The day was provided by the Archdiocese of Birmingham youth service- known as Kenelm Youth Trust.

At Stella Maris Junior School students have been very active of late with initiatives including looking after the environment and a visit from well-known footballers to promote reading.

Staff and students enjoyed a very eventful end to the year with many events taking place that highlighted the great sense of community in the school.

‘Quality Education’ is one of the five core Lasallian principles. This is in direct symphony with our educators’ enthusiasm to learn about new ways of dealing with day-to-day situations in a school day and achieve better results through their teaching and learning.

The new year got off to a memorable start for students at St Benild School when the Three Wise Men visited on the Feast of the Epiphany, Friday, January 6th.

The New Year brought a fresh start for the Lasallian Mission in Malta as Melvin Mifsud took on the role as manager of the La Salle Retreat Centre in Mellieħa on January 1st.

There was a deep sense of sadness throughout the District and beyond on Sunday January 22nd when it was announced the Br. Stephen Deignan had passed away.

After 11 very successful years as manager of the La Salle Pastoral Centre in Mellieha alongside his wife Yvonne, Sammy Borg retired from the role on December 31st. As he embarks on a new chapter in his life, Sammy reflects of the many happy times he had in the role.

In keeping with many functions to ring in the New Year, it was fitting that the District’s first event of 2023 – the North West Gathering at De La Salle School St Helens on January 7th -was one that generated a huge sense of positivity and hope for the future, while further strengthening the bonds among our schools.
