Waterford continues to be a hive of Lasallian activity

De La Salle College Waterford continues to be a hive of activity and the many initiatives since the beginning of term have been captured in the most recent newsletter.

News from De La Salle Waterford

As we look back over a very busy first half term the following are some of the stand-out moments for us in the school.

We welcomed 190 new first years and circa 40 other students into other years in the school. This year we have a good number of students attending the school from Europe. As the only English-speaking country in the EU there has been an increase in students from mainland Europe attending the school. We have also had an increase in students attending from conflict zones around the globe. We were delighted to welcome students from the Ukraine, Afghanistan and Zimbabwe to name but a few.

We opened our second ASD special class in August. This coincided with the opening of a new kitchen unit it the class that was kindly sponsored by Evoke Kitchens in Waterford.

Sports

Hurling

The College competed in the major Munster hurling competitions. We lost to an excellent Thurles team in the Dean Ryan cup, but are still fighting in the other competitions.

Soccer

After a hugely successful year for the school last year we can’t wait to get going in the soccer competitions. A very talented group of students will be representing the college this year including four current internationals.

 Golf

We recently won the Munster Senior Boys golf competition beating a very fancied team from Rochestown in a nail-biting finish. The tie was won with a thirty-foot putt on the first extra hole of the match. We can’t wait to play in the All-Ireland finals in spring.

 Boxing

It was a proud moment for the school when one of our students carried the flag for our country in a recent boxing match against the Ukraine. Chris is one of our LCA students.

The School Show

The annual school show took place last week. A rousing rendition of Back to the Eighties entertained audiences of over 4,000 people last week in the school hall. Classics like the Love Shack and Walk like an Egyptian got the audiences up and singing.

Finally

The college was lucky enough to have representatives at the ASSEDIL Formation conference for school leaders where we had the pleasure and privilege of meeting many of our colleagues from the Releam area. It was especially nice to meet Ms. Claudia Vella from our district who was representing her school in Malta.

We also had the pleasure of welcoming Eunan Whyte who visited with maps of the district. Jo Millea visited and addressed our staff in September with a special few words for our new recruits who have embarked on a Lasallian formation programme. One of our new recruits being Ms. Clair Quigley who has recently joined our staff from Basildon in the UK.
