Invitation for teachers to volunteer for Lasallian Projects
In 2025 Lasallian Projects is sponsoring a building in Kenya at Abossi, site of our 2023 and 2024 projects. As in 2023, we are opening up participation in this project to teachers (and family or others) who would like to have experience of the developing world.
Participation would be flexible and the organisation of flights and insurance would be taken on by those who are travelling. Travel within Kenya would be organised by the parish priest. The time spent in Abossi would also be at the discretion of the participants.
Abossi is not ‘tourist country’ although the Maasai Mara is within easy striking distance. What could you do there? The school is a lovely place to visit, the teachers and students welcoming and eager to interact and to learn so there is plenty to engage people there. Young students from the UK have taken lessons there without problem.
The construction project would be for two classrooms: there is scope for the reasonably fit and actively inclined to take part in some of the routine building tasks under the direction of the local builders. There are also areas of the school where a repaint is much needed. Meals are likely to be a mix of DIY and co-operation with the resident parish cook.
St Luke’s Academy is situated on a hillside. It takes students aged from around 7 to 15. Some of them are resident in the school. The school started in 2002 but does not yet have enough classrooms and has only three computers for 350 students. Depending on season, it can be short of water and is always short of equipment – even footballs.
The cost of the trip will depend on flights and insurance and flight prices will vary according to date of departure and airline. The school will start holidays towards the end of July so it would be better to arrive while it is in session. Br John can provide more details for anyone tempted by this great opportunity. Highly recommended!
