It has been a busy time at Stella Maris Junior school with teachers and students enjoying a variety of activities, including celebrating Lent and the launch of the Lasallian Awards.

Lent and Lasallian Awards Launch

After the mid-term, we launched the Lasallian Awards 2024 to all Junior School Students/Parents and organised a school mass reflecting on our journey through Lent.  The students were invited to reflect on the good deeds they will be doing throughout Lent, and write the down the deeds on the footsteps.

COPE Session for the Junior School Educators

Training in eTwinning Projects, sharing of good practice and planning ahead. eTwinning mainly offers a virtual platform wherein a community of European educators and schools can share, network and learn together.  This was followed by training in Matific Software, team building activity between LSEs, planning ahead meeting with Subject Teachers and meeting with all year group teachers on continuous assessment.

Sports Federation Excursion for Grade 5 Students

As part of our school Physical Education programme our Grade 5 students were given the opportunity to have a closer look at how a major local Sports Federation works. The Grade 5 teaching teams and students together with the school PE teacher Mr. Ramon visited the The Malta Football Association at Ta' Qali National Stadium.

The tour guide, Mr. Alfred Zammit - a pioneer in establishing Football for women and first female national team coach - took our students around the training grounds, the Centenary Stadium, the National team dressing rooms and fitness facilities while explaining about the different jobs involved in running such a large federation.

Grade 5 Benjamin also had the opportunity to test the turf at the Centenary stadium while Grade 5 Arnold and 5 Miguel followed part of a coaching course being organised on the day. The tour ended with an entrance into the stadium using the same entrance as used by the Premier League teams, a lap around the National Stadium and a tour full of interesting fun facts in the Football museum in the Millennium stand.

National Football Tournament

During the MEYR National Football Festival played over two months, our Grade 5 and 6 school teams will be playing on two occasions. On February 6th, our Grade 5 school team participated in its first day of games. The team started their commitments with a 1-1 draw against St. Micheal’s School, a 2-2 draw against Attard Primary. Our SMC sharks then upped their efforts to a 5-1 win against Zabbar Primary and a 5-2 win against St. Francis School. This resulted in the Grade 5 team ending the day unbeaten.

On the 15th February, the Grade 6 Football School Team faced their opponents on their first day of football games. Our Grade 6 SMC sharks had quite an impressive streak of performances. They started with a 4-1 win against Tereza Nuzzo School, followed by a 4-3 win against SPMC Rabat. The wins continued to pile up with a 5-1 against St. Micheal’s School, 4-2 win against San Anton School and a 9-0 win against St. Martin's College.

While it was very clear that our students gave their maximum effort to perform so well, the best reward they could receive was the warm welcome they got from a cheering crowd of peers at school. The pride and satisfaction they felt was very evident on their faces. Well done to our Grade 5/6 team. Our school is fielding a team in both categories.
