Senior School students enjoy many experiences

Students and staff at De La Salle College Senior School had another busy month with many activities that see them live the Lasallian values.

Mass

At the beginning of the month we kicked off the Band Club 2024-25 with the Anthem Pellegrino di Reims in honour of our Founder St John Baptist de La Salle.

Thanks to the students who have been attending since the establishment of the Band Club. This year we have new students joining us.

Some of the students who have been attending had said that they were almost going to quit their village band but as soon as we started the Band Club in our College they were filled with the urge to continue learning music. Let us continue to touch the hearts of the students as St John Baptist de La Salle teaches us.

On Friday October 4th the school celebrated the first mass of the academic year 2024–2025 at De La Salle College in keeping with the teachings of our founder, St John Baptist de La Salle, who advises us to "let us pray before starting whatever we need to do."

The mass was dedicated to St. Francis of Assisi, Founder of the Franciscan Order, Patron of Italy.

At the end of the mass celebration, all the students and staff from the Junior School, Senior School and 6th Form sang Happy Birthday to Brother Edward, who celebrated his 100th birthday earlier on in August.

Hobbies entail creativity, self-expression, sensory engagement, relaxation, and cognitive stimulation, all of which are associated with excellent mental health and overall well-being. Examples of hobbies include arts and crafts, games, gardening, volunteering, and club participation. Additionally, participating in hobby groups maintains your social network, which lessens feelings of isolation and loneliness. (Godman, H.,2024)

Assemblies

On the 30th of September and 1st of October, we held two special assemblies at school as well:
On October 30th, a Special Assembly was conducted in conjunction with the International Lasallian Days for Peace in 2024–2025. During this event, Mr. Arist Cordina, a volunteer of the Royal British Legion in Malta, explained how as a recognised non-governmental organisation, the Malta Branch of the Royal British Legion is a part of the biggest charitable organisation in the United Kingdom.

The Malta Branch was founded more than a century ago, and we take great pride in having helped needy ex-servicemen and their dependents in Malta by giving them both monetary and moral support.

The Royal British Legion connotes support for WWII veterans for a large number of people. The youngest among those who fought so valiantly in this war is now 90 years old. Naturally, after World War II, there have been additional wars, and throughout the past 75 years, many people have served their country.

We are completely dedicated to helping all members of the ex-services community and consistently provide support, enabling them to confidently face the future through the tireless efforts of our volunteers who labour without any expectation of reward.

On October 1, another Special Assembly within the Senior School was held to commemorate the International Lasallian Days for Peace 2024 - 2025. During this event, Mr. Darin Micallef explained how the goal of the Malta Red Cross Society is to prevent and end human suffering by enhancing the lives of those who are most in need by acting impartially and without regard to a person's ethnicity, nationality, gender, class, religion, or political convictions.

Jersey visitors

On Friday 11th October De La Salle College Malta welcomed De La Salle Jersey for an exciting friendly game that ended in a 2-2 draw. The atmosphere was amazingly vibrant and students really enjoyed this special occasion. We thank De La Salle Jersey for their visit and participation and look forward to further events in the years to come.

Coding and Robotics Event for Year 9 Students

The aim of this event, as part of EU Code Week 2024 Event, was to inspire and enhance students’ coding and robotics skills in an engaging and interactive setting. The students had a great time working with the mBot and participating in the robot race.

Robotics Clubs

On October 14th, a new and exciting Robotics Club was launched bringing together enthusiastic students eager to dive into the world of robotics and technology. This initiative is part of the Erasmus project titled ‘Transition from STEM to Robotics’, aimed at enhancing students’ skills and knowledge in the field of robotics.

The first session saw students working with Microbit, a versatile and user-friendly microcontroller, to explore various simulation scenarios. This hands-on experience allowed them to understand the basics of coding and electronics, setting a strong foundation for their future projects.

This club is not just a local endeavour but part of a broader dissemination project. Recently, a group of Computer Studies students, accompanied by their dedicated teachers, travelled to Bielsko-Biała, Poland, for specialised training. This experience provided them with advanced insights and techniques in robotics, which they are now eager to share with their peers.

The learning journey continues as more students are set to travel to Porto, Portugal. This trip will further their understanding of robotics, offering them new perspectives and skills. Upon their return, these students will take on the role of mentors, teaching their peers what they have learned and fostering a collaborative learning environment.

This initiative not only enhances technical skills but also promotes teamwork, problem-solving, and creativity among students. The ‘Transition from STEM to Robotics’ project is a testament to the power of international collaboration in education, preparing students for the technological challenges of the future.

Stay tuned for more updates as these young innovators continue to explore and expand their horizons in the fascinating world of Robotics.

Student Council Democracy Awards

On October 16th, Agenzija Zghazagh held the Student Council Democracy Awards where the De La Salle Senior School Student Council received a silver award for their work throughout Scholastic Year 2023-2024. The Student Council would like to thank our Head of School Mr Zahra and the SMT members for their unwavering support and commitment to assisting the Student Council in their work.

Training programme

On October 21st in Porto, two dedicated teachers and four enthusiastic computer studies students embarked on an exciting week-long robotics training programme as part of an Erasmus project. As they deepen their skills, the students and teachers look forward to sharing their newly acquired knowledge during the Monday mid-day break robotics club, fostering a collaborative and innovative learning environment for all involved.
