Nurturing talent at Stella Maris Junior School

Students at Stella Maris Junior School have enjoyed many activities over the past few weeks as teachers helped nurture a love of reading and creativity along with awareness of climate issues and social justice.

Love for Reading

“The way you behave should be a model for those you teach.” (Med 132.1)

Educators from Stella Maris Junior School classes were eager to share their love for reading by inviting the students to bring their favourite reading books to school and DROP EVERYTHING AND READ!

Some students were encouraged to come dressed as their favourite characters, while others took advantage of the good weather to spend a quarter of an hour reading out in the sunshine in the school garden. The sharing and reading sessions were accompanied by some fun activities.  To continue exposing the students further to the magical world of books, several local authors were invited to read parts of their books to the students.

Assemblies

Several assemblies were organised in the past weeks to help the students reflect on several topics while giving the opportunity to students to show their creativity and acting skills.  All assemblies helped the students pause, think, reflect and act to have a better world to live in.

Grade 3 Arnold students showed us how love really matters by giving us practical examples how we can love one another following the example of Jesus Christ.  They prepared gifts made from recyclable materials for each class to decorate their class.

Grade 4 Benjamin students presented an assembly about great leaders who left an influence on those around them and far away, like Nelson Mandela, Madre Theresa and Mahatma Gandhi.  They invited the school community to be individuals who initiate change and make a difference.

Grade 4 Arnold students tackled the topic of climate change and invited the school community to understand better what it means when we read about global warming or the world’s change in temperature. They suggested several practical things they can do to help reduce pollution and invited the students to help them achieve this target.

Grade 4 Benjamin students helped the school community reflect on the world we really want.  Surely it is not the world we currently live in.  They ended the assembly with the beautiful song: What a wonderful world.

Learning about Blessed Carlo Acutis

On Friday, 21st January, our educators and pupils had the opportunity to visit our local nearly parish church so as to pray in front of the relic of the Blessed Carlo Acutis. This presented a learning opportunity  - getting to know more about his life. Blessed Carlo Acutis is a true relevant model and guide to our young pupils.
