Lasallian life makes a mark in Jersey
De La Salle College Jersey has made it’s Lasallian ‘mark’ in the local community recently through its Art exhibition of images and sculptures, held in the local Arts Centre.
The open evening of the ‘Lasallian Life’ event was led by the guest speaker Brother Michael Curran and Headmaster Jason Turner who welcomed the public to the visual display of the Lasallian ethos.
The extensive range of images and sculptures mapped the Lasallian journey of the College’s artistically talented students. One part of the exhibition showcased the 14 winners of the Lasallian Calendar Competition which was based on student interpretations of the five core values.
The winning painting from Jamie Washington, a Year 8 student, vividly encompassed all core values. Its bright colours and the clear image created, was a definite winner for the judges. Another special entry had received special recognition. Matthew Harris, a Year 7 student had designed a sculptural flower piece, symbolising the growth of the Lasallian individual, with petals representing each ‘House’ and component of the community. This piece is currently being commissioned and Matthew has the unique experience of working with a local artist to bring this to life.
In line with the exhibition, De La Salle Jersey were delighted to welcome Brother Michael Curran to the College to spend time with Year 7 students as they explored what it is to be a Lasallian. The students then performed their ideas through art, music and drama. Brother Michael spoke to students about the Lasallian identity and praised their efforts and confidence in expressing their ideas.
A memorable week for the whole school, celebrating the foundations of the school and sharing ‘Lasallian Life’ with Jersey, through the eyes and lenses of the students.
