De La Salle Waterford commemorate scientific first

Representatives from De La Salle College, Waterford, took part in a special commemoration of Waterford’s first X-Ray which was held by University Hospital Waterford and the science department of De La Salle College on November 8th.

Waterford’s first X-Ray (and one of the first in Ireland) was taken in De La Salle College on April 13, 1896 by Br Potamian O’Reilly, a De La Salle Brother and renowned scientist and engineer. The date was chosen to coincide with World Radiography day which marks the anniversary of Rongten’s discovery of the X-Ray.

Prof Mark McEntee, Chair of Diagnostic Radiography, UCC was the keynote speaker. Radiologists Emily Ennis and Katie Flynn, from UHW, along with Br Ben and staff from the college’s science department, also gave presentations to the assembled students from 5th and 6th year. Radiographers, and past pupils, Joe Troy and Richard Redmond were in attendance along with Michelle Monahan, secretary of the Irish Institute of Radiography and Radiation Therapy.

First year student posters were adjudicated and prizes, sponsored by Hospital Services Ltd, were awarded to the top four posters. First prize of a €100 JD Sports voucher was awarded to Naoise Cooke.

A wall plaque was unveiled in the Radiology Department of University Hospital Waterford to mark the occasion.

A huge thank you to Louise Diamond, Radiography Services Manager, UHW, and all our speakers and Hospital Services Ltd for a contributing to a wonderful event.
