Downpatrick students compete with Lasallian schools

Downpatrick High School’s Year 9 soccer team took part in the De La Salle Cup, an annual tournament featuring Lasallian schools from the North and South of Ireland. The venue was the renowned Cherry Orchard FC, Dublin and the sun was splitting the trees.

The boys were drawn in the group stage against Churchtown, Belfast and Waterford 2nds and managed to secure a fantastic 2 wins and 1 draw, topping their group with 7 points.

Having placed top of their group, the boys advanced to the cup semi-final where they played St John's Dublin, coming out with a 1-0 victory and booking their place in the cup final.

Sadly, the boys had met their match as they came up against a very talented Waterford side. The boys went a goal down early however played with courage and determination until the final whistle, losing the game 1-0.

To come second overall competing against some of the top footballing schools on the island of Ireland is an incredible achievement and with league and cup football to look forward to in Year 10, the future is bright for our young footballers!

Many thanks to St John's Dublin for hosting the event and to all the Lasallian schools that we competed against - it was a pleasure.

Goal scorers: Adam Sharvin, Callum Cochrane, Caoillfhionn Hanna.

DLS Player of the tournament - Eoghan McGreevy
