DLS Senior School live the Lasallian ethos
Students and staff at De La Salle College Senior School have enjoyed the build-up to the festive season with a number of initiatives that celebrate the Lasallian ethos.
Christmas Cheer, Lasallian Style
Thank you to everyone who joined us in celebrating the true spirit of Christmas!
A special shoutout to our amazing band club for filling the air with festive melodies and making the event even more magical. Your talent and dedication truly embodied the joy of the season.
Let’s continue to live out the Lasallian values of faith, service, and community throughout the year. Here’s to spreading love and kindness beyond the holidays.
Living the Lasallian Values Through Service
As part of the voluntary work organised by the DLS Chaplaincy, our Form 5 students recently lent a helping hand at the Soup Kitchen OFM in Valletta.
Through their selfless acts of service, they embodied the Lasallian values of faith, community, and concern for the vulnerable. This experience not only brought comfort to those in need but also reminded us all of the importance of kindness and solidarity.
Well done to our students for making a difference and living out what it means to be true Lasallians.
Form 5 donations for Dar Suret il-Bniedem
A fundraising activity was organised with Form 5 students to collect more money for charity. Part of the donations collected during this month of December went to Caritas too.
Symphony
Matthew Hammett has recently returned from a remarkable experience at the Riga Symphony Festival in Latvia. During this prestigious event, Matthew had the privilege of performing two world hits, earning him high marks and the honour of receiving two gold symphonies. His achievement is a testament to his dedication and talent.
It is also a pleasure to celebrate the success of Aidem Galea, a Form 2 student, who has equally excelled and achieved outstanding results. Both Matthew and Aidem embody the Lasallian spirit of excellence, perseverance, and brotherhood.
Living the Lasallian Spirit
Our Form 4 students recently participated in voluntary work at the Soup Kitchen OFM in Valletta, organised by the DLS Chaplaincy.
Through their generosity and service, they upheld the Lasallian values of faith, compassion, and community by reaching out to those in need. This meaningful experience highlights the importance of giving back and sharing kindness, especially during this season of love and hope.
Well done to our Form 4 students for being an inspiration and true Lasallians at heart.
Home Economics
In their Home Economics lessons, Form 1 and Form 2 students took part in an engaging practical session. Form 1 students created a nutritious and balanced packed lunch, while Form 2 students prepared a healthy pasta dish. This hands-on experience gave them the opportunity to apply the concepts learned in their theory lessons in a practical and enjoyable setting.
Robotics Session
Another amazing session today at the mid-day break Robotics club programming our micro:bits to play Rock, Paper, Scissors. The creativity and teamwork on display were truly inspiring!
A huge thank you to Ms. Josianne Grech for celebrating our hard work with delicious Christmas-themed chocolates.
STEM Robotics
During our mid-day break Robotics Club, we made an awesome transition from STEM to robotics. We used the radio feature of the micro:bit to send messages between two devices—just like walkie-talkies! How cool is that? If you're curious to learn more about this fun and innovative journey, we invite all students to join us every Monday during mid-day break. No experience is needed. Can't wait to see you there.
Mid-Day Break Robotics Club Update
The Mid-Day Break Robotics Club tackled a fun challenge: creating a cookie box alarm using our trusty microbit.
The goal was to programme the micro:bit to detect any sneaky cookie thieves, and I'm thrilled to say that our talented students accomplished it successfully. It was amazing to see their teamwork and creativity come to life as they worked on this project, combining tech skills with their love for cookies.
To celebrate our success, we shared the homemade cookies at the end of session. There’s nothing sweeter than a little treat after a productive day.
Big shoutout to all the students for their hard work and teamwork. Can’t wait to see what we build next.
Erasmus
Last week, two of our educators Ms. Alexandra Galea and Ms. Margaret Spiteri, had the privilege of participating in an Erasmus+ course in Amsterdam which focused on ChatGPT and Artificial Intelligence. The training was an eye-opening journey into the exciting possibilities AI offers for teaching and learning.
During the course, they explored various AI tools. Engaging activities allowed them to create lesson plans, interactive materials, and AI-assisted resources tailored to meet diverse student needs.
This experience was not only highly motivating but has also equipped them with innovative strategies to integrate AI into their classrooms. They are confident that these tools will enhance student engagement, foster creativity, and support personalised learning.
They look forward to applying these techniques and sharing this knowledge with their colleagues.
Erasmus Certificates
On Tuesday 26th November, during the mid-day break assembly, we held a special ceremony where the Head of the Senior School, Mr Nobert Zahra, presented certificates to all students and teachers participating in the Erasmus Project KA210 -Transition from STEM to Robotics.
Although this project is not yet completed, it has already equipped our students with invaluable skills in robotics and technology and has also fostered collaboration, innovation, and critical thinking amongst participants. We are so proud of everyone involved.
A huge thank you to our teachers for their guidance and support, and to our wonderful students for their enthusiasm and dedication. Together, we are paving the way for a brighter, tech-savvy future.
Christmas Carols
On Saturday, 30th November 2024, the De La Salle Band participated alongside the Stella Maris Band in the Christmas Market held at Stella Maris College, Gżira.
For a whole hour, the two Lasallian bands from their respective colleges joined forces to perform Christmas carols and bring joy to all those present.
The hour concluded with a rendition of the De La Salle College Song: Scientia Valida Fide.
Sacrament of Confirmation
"Confirmation strengthens us to defend the faith and to spread the Gospel courageously." Pope Francis
After receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation in their various parishes, our Form 2 students attended a mass celebration in the school chapel. They were then invited to a small celebration that included food, beverages, and a gift appropriate for the event.
Faith Service. Community. Together for Pink October
As a Lasallian family, we are called to live out our faith by being a source of hope and love for those in need. This Pink October, we were united in service to raise awareness and support for breast cancer patients, survivors, and their families. Together, as a strong and inclusive community, we can make a difference.
The Chaplaincy at De La Salle College organised a bake sale within the Junior School, the Senior School, and the 6th Form.
Staff were encouraged to wear pink and spread the message of hope and solidarity.
A beautiful sum of €600 was raised while urging everyone to act towards providing compassion and light to people battling breast cancer.
Library
Recently, our library came alive with creativity as Ms. Karen Grech led a midday session on the art of bookbinding.
From assembling pages to stitching them together and crafting durable, elegant covers, Ms. Grech guided us through each step of the process with skill and patience.
Her passion for the craft was evident, reminding us just how much care and effort goes into something we often take for granted.
The session wasn’t just educational, it was a chance to slow down and truly appreciate the artistry behind every book.
A heartfelt thank you to Ms. Grech for sharing her expertise and giving us a deeper connection to the stories we hold in our hands.
Author visits
In December, we had the incredible honour of hosting Joseph Elliott, the talented author of The Good Hawk, The Broken Raven, and Nora & the Map of Mayhem. The students were captivated by Joseph’s inspiring stories, creative quizzes, and interactive sessions.
Joseph shared fascinating insights about his writing journey, and students had the chance to ask questions, participate in a fun quiz, and even explore their artistic side with some creative challenges.
Check out the highlights:
- Interactive discussions on storytelling and character creation
- A quiz session where students guessed how long it took Joseph to write his book
- Creative mashups like “rhino + elephant = optimus elephant”
- A wonderful book signing session and personalised advice: Never stop reading!
Thank you, Joseph, for inspiring our students and making this such a memorable day.
Christmas Decorating
During the past two months, students have been participating in a Christmas decorating activity, creating festive decorations from recycled materials and painting designs on windows. The initiative promotes sustainability, teamwork, creativity, and community spirit while enhancing the school’s festive atmosphere.
Microsoft Access
Form 4 students are learning to use Microsoft Access to create and amend tables, a valuable skill they are developing in today’s lesson. This practice not only helps them understand how to structure and manage data effectively but also prepares them to apply these skills in the future. By mastering database organisation, they will be better equipped to keep information organised and easily accessible, which is essential in many academic, professional, and personal contexts.
Table Tennis
The Table-Tennis Inter-schools Tournament held recently at the Institute of Physical Education and Sport in Gzira. Some students participating in the Table-Tennis club during the mid-day break, participated in the event.
They made it to the quarter-finals in the un-ranked section and semi-final in the ranked section respectively.
Congratulations to our cousins ‘Stella Maris College’ for winning the tournament.
