DLS Junior School celebrates Animal Awareness Week

The De La Salle College Junior School has embarked on a week-long celebration of Animal Awareness, engaging students in various activities that promote empathy, understanding, and care for animals. The week kicked off with an Assembly on Monday, 22nd January, featuring Year 5 students showcasing songs, an insightful presentation on educators' pets, and AAA representatives introducing the possible sponsored dogs.

The entire school was buzzing with activity, as students from Year 1 to 6 gathered in the hall for special presentations and activities. Year 4-6 students, in particular, had an engaging session from 10:20-11:00, while Year 1-3 followed suit from 11:10 – 11:50. The Police Dogs Show was a highlight of the day, held in the pitches during the long break, where students were reminded not to touch, feed, or approach the dogs unless instructed otherwise.

During the week, students were urged to help out by giving money to support stray dogs. Educators and animators collected funds, and posters were put up to spread the word and gather donations. On Friday, a Rabbit Club for special education students was arranged, giving them a special chance to spend time with animals.

Educators actively participated in Dinja Wahda activities, with nature watch sessions and mini-beast exploration. Robotics sessions for Year 3-6 during ICT classes focused on caring for animals, while Year 1 and 2 students took home animal soft toys to care for and read to, emphasising the importance of empathy and responsibility.

Wednesday, 24th January, brought a special treat for Year 3-6 students, who watched a Disney clip about animals and participated in an online Kahoot quiz, blending entertainment with education. The PE sessions conducted by Ms Henriette and Ms Melanie focused on teamwork and animal cooperation through activities like obstacle races.

Ms Aime creatively designed an entrance board featuring caged and free Disney characters and animals, captivating the attention of students as they entered the school premises. The Animal Awareness Board served as a visual reminder throughout the week.

The school's library became a hub for Animal Awareness, with the JS Librarian, Mr. Leander, setting up an inspiring display for Animal Awareness Week. Additionally, a virtual library and book challenge at home encouraged students to delve into literature related to animals, fostering a love for reading and learning.

As the week progressed, Year 3-6 students were treated to puppet shows during Mass by Fr. Joe and two volunteers from each year group, while Year 1-2 students engaged in puppet shows facilitated by educators. The performances aimed to convey important messages about animal welfare and the significance of responsible behaviour.

The school's commitment to Animal Awareness Week was further evident in the art activities, where students explored drawing animals using their hands. The creative expressions showcased the students' understanding of the theme and added a touch of artistry to the week's celebrations.

In summary, De La Salle College Junior School's Animal Awareness Week was a resounding success, fostering a sense of responsibility, compassion, and awareness among students, educators, and the entire school community.
