Waterford building named in honour of Br. Tim

New building named in honour of Br. Tim

As we move quickly towards the end of the year at De La Salle College Waterford, the most noteworthy events happening in the school will be the official opening of our new building and the continued work on the reconditioning of the school organ.

The new building will be named in honour and in memory of Br. Tim (O’Shea) who kept on giving to our school for a period of over sixty years.

Br. Tim was a very unassuming man who would probably be distressed by the naming of the building in his honour. When asked about an appropriate name for the building it was almost unanimous that it be named after him. The building will be officially opened on De La Salle Day in mid-May.

 Refurbishing school organ

The organ in the school chapel has required attention over the past number of years. We are glad to announce that Br. Ben and David Ford (a former student with a love of music and currently engaged in the great Lasallian tradition of being a leader in education) have replaced the motor and are continuing to work on the magnificent organ. Many a fundraiser will be required to completely refurbish the organ to its original condition, commencing with a concert next Friday May 5th. In the college chapel. Br. Ben will be performing a piece he recently composed remembering Karl Kirby, a student in the college who passed away when in school a few years ago.

Br. Ben Hanlon

Mention of Br. Ben cannot go by without congratulating him on his nomination for a lifetime award for his contribution to music in the Waterford area. Students, staff and the local community were delighted to be informed that next year’s school show will be “We will Rock You.” It is a favourite in the college.

Former students

We were delighted to announce that Moncrief will be our guest of honour at our annual awards ceremony on May 10th. Moncrief is a former student who has engaged in a career in music, having been highly influenced by Br. Ben and the music department in the college.

Moncrief has been recently announced as the winner of the RTÉ Choice Music Prize Song Of The Year for 'Warm'.

Billy O’Brien, another of our music protegees, was recently conferred with his doctorate in music, continuing the great history the college has in musical excellence. Strangely enough, both Dr. O’Brien and Moncrief shared the same primary school classroom in Scoil Mhuire in Butlerstown Primary school before they joined us in De La Salle.

Good luck in exams

Our students have been very busy preparing for their state examinations, having recently completed oral and practical components of the examinations. Keep them in your prayers. The oral examinations took place during the Easter holidays. Simultaneously, a film company was in school making a short film. Keep your eyes open for next year’s BAFTA’s.

Sporting success

Extra-curricular activities have slowed down as we approach the final few weeks of the post primary school year in Ireland. Of note were the performances of some of hurling, soccer and GAA football teams who recently competed in Munster and Waterford Finals, with our senior GAA football teaming winning the senior football championships.

As I type this, our golfers are currently playing in the All-Ireland school’s senior golf final in Dublin. A huge God Reward You goes out to the boys, their sponsors, parents and especially their coaches, both in school and in their golf clubs.

Our minority sports teams have been out in force. Tennis, Chess and Golf were well represented. Congratulations to two of our students who finished in first and third places respectively in the All-Ireland finals. Our team did extremely well.

The college was represented in the All-Ireland final of the Pi Maths competition on Saturday in Portlaoise. We didn’t win any prizes this time round, but hopefully as we won the regional final earlier in the month, we have started to climb the ladder of success.

The school has been represented internationally by Dara Kavanagh (school’s soccer), Adam Power and Aaron Knox (both at under 14 squash) in the last few weeks.

Quality education

Finally as all Lasallians around the world work towards the Core Principal of Quality Education, it was a great day for the college when two of our teachers and three students show cased the work that has been ongoing in the school in relation to the PDST STEAM initiative. An excellent collaborative effort from the Art, SPHE and Math’s department was showcased in Athlone.
