Action-packed time at Stella Maris Junior School

It has been another action-packed time at Stella Maris Junior School with activities including birthday celebrations, prayer, chats with astronauts, carnival events and much more.

Birthday Celebration

On the 25th January, SMC Jr students together with the educators celebrated Ms Pauline's [Assistant Head] Birthday .. a very special one ... "You only turn 60 once!" Early morning, students and educators gathered in the Junior school hall to give a surprise welcome to Ms Pauline who has been working in schools for more than 40 years.  Ms Stephania prepared the choir to sing her a happy birthday, a representative from each class read a stanza from a poem written for the occasion. Then she was presented with a card painted by Mr Samuel, and a gift from the students and educators.

Grade 6 Retreat – “JIen li Jien”

25 students Grade 6 students spent 27 hours together at Mellieha La Salle Centre to experience their first retreat.  The retreat focused on the importance of good communication with others and appreciating the good within oneself.  These all lead to be still and in the silence find space and time to communicate with God.  Hands on activities were prepared and gave the students an experience to treasure through the years.  The retreat ended with a Mass Celebration with the participation of the students, educators and parents.

Prayer Spaces

Prayer Spaces enable children and young people, of all faiths and none, to explore life questions, spirituality and faith. Taking a broadly Christian perspective as a starting point, prayer spaces give children and young people an opportunity to develop skills of personal reflection and to explore prayer in an open, inclusive, creative, and safe environment. The Prayer Spaces allow students to make their own meaning and to draw their own conclusions.  Students experienced a 45 minute session to help them reflect and pray.

Carnival Activities

The day started with Grade 4 Miguel delivering an assembly about the traditions of Carnival in different countries.  Class teams organised hands on activities for the students to enjoy the day.  Civil Protection Section visited the college and gave a detailed explanation of what they do on site when a fire happens.  The students were given a treat to enjoy.  An original carnival costume competition was organised in which 24 students took part.  The Senior School students performed the Carnival dance for this year and was enjoyed by all students present.

Contact with Astronaut Joshua Cassada

Astronaut Joshua Cassada answered questions about his day-to-day life on the International Space Station.  Students from Stella Maris College were able to ask an astronaut questions as he flew past the island aboard the International Space Station (ISS) on Wednesday afternoon, a first in Maltese history.

Daniel Grech, 12, the first Maltese student whose question was beamed through the stratosphere and into the ears of American astronaut Joshua Cassada, was over the moon at his accomplishment.  Three students from the Junior School asked questions and were thrilled to be part of this incredible experience.

Celebrating Love

Thank You for putting your heart in all that you do. A small treat was given to all staff working with the young Lasallians.  Students prepared cards and gifts for their loved ones.

Drop Everything and Read

“Warrab kollox u aqra” -  Drop Everything and Read – Students spent some quiet time reading in class. One of the teachers read a story from Denfil 6 which used to be a textbook when their parents were school children.  Some students enjoyed reading in the classroom or outside in the ground.

Malta International Airport Excursion

Grade 5 students had the opportunity to experience a 1 hour flight from Malta to Sicily and back.  They left the College with buses and went through all the normal airport sections.  The excitement and joy can be seen on the student’s faces.  Some of them had never experienced flying on a plane.

Enjoying a morning of Activities – Grade 5 Students

A group of Grade 5 students enjoyed a morning of activities. They started the day by preparing fruit for a healthy smoothie!  They prepared the ingredients for the filling of a wrap and chose their preferred ingredients. Baked it in the oven and then enjoyed eating it during lunch break. They worked in pairs on a collaborative painting.

 Grade 6 English Competition

The final round of the Grade 6 adjectives competition was held. Absolutely all the students have demonstrated how well they know their stuff and it was extremely painful to eliminate students who did so very well. A huge well done to all the students.
