Stella Maris students benefit from many experiences

Students at Stella Maris Junior School in Malta are continuing to get the benefit of many experiences as they learn about the importance of teamwork, helping those in need, the environment and nature.

National Football Tournament for Grade 5 students

On Tuesday 7th November our two grade 5 football teams participated in the first day of phase one of the national Grade 5 football festival. The boys had to pass through several physical and skill tests to be chosen. Our SMC sharks, had to face another 5 schools during this first phase namely, B’Bugia, Siggiewi, Qormi San Bastjan, St. Paul’s bay and Marsascala. All games were held at the Physical Education Centre in St. Venera. This well-organised football festival is in its first edition.

The first priority for our students was to improve their teamwork skills, respect towards the opponent, the referees and the rules of the game and most important to have fun playing the game they love most. The performance of both teams was excellent securing 6 wins, one draw and one loss out of 8 games resulting in both teams being in the top positions of the league. Both teams were accompanied and supervised by Mr. Mauro representing the school Senior Leadership Team and Mr. Ramon the school PE teacher.

St Martin of Tours Feast

Grade 6 Benjamin prepared an Assembly about St Martin's life and his generosity. During the week the students donated food items and toiletries for three organisations. On Friday, 10 November, we presented a donation to the Little Sisters of the Poor. At the end of the day, St Martin's Bags were distributed.

 World Children’s Day – Meeting with the Commissioner for Children

In preparation for Friday 17 November, World Children's Day Celebration, Grade 6 Miguel had an online meeting with the Commissioner for Children - Ms Antoinette Vassallo. They engaged in an interactive meeting, where they explored further their responsibilities and rights as children.

World Children’s Day Celebration

On World Children's Day, early morning, Grade 6 Miguel presented an assembly that explored the theme of Diversity. Everyone is different yet has an important role to play in the society. Let's support each other.  Throughout the day, educators prepared different activities for the students to enjoy! Every student needs unconditional support, protection from harm and to have their basic needs met to grow into an emotionally healthy adult.  The students enjoyed a hot dog as part of the celebration.

Dinja Waħda Award Ceremony

Mr Abela together with Ms Claire and two students attended the Dinja Waħda Awards Ceremony.  Dinja Waħda Primary is BirdLife Malta’s environmental education programme in primary schools that carries our vision of connecting children with nature, from Kindergarten to Year 6, giving them the skills to improve nature around them.  The event celebrated the success of all the Primary and Secondary schools involved in the programme during the scholastic year 2022/2023 and marked the launch of a new year of engagement for 2023/2024. Stella Maris Junior School including St Benild School were awarded the Gold Award and kept the Blue Banner for another year.

Grade 3 visit Vincent Eco Estate

Grade 3s had a field trip to Vincent Eco Estate where they learnt about fruits and vegetables, fed chickens and also planted sunflower seeds.  This excursion helps the students to appreciate nature and preserve the little left.

Taking care of our Health

Grade 5s visited the Home Economics Centre at Birkirkara. They attended the seminar Boost Your Immunity, during which they explored health eating options and prepared a healthy meal.

EU Code Week 2023

Stella Maris Junior School participated in the EmpowerEDUC Recognizing Excellence and was one of  EU Code Week 2023 finalists and placing third for the category: Best Innovative High-Quality Coding Initiative Award (Junior Years) - Initiative titled ‘Binary Grids’.  Mr Duncan Borg, ICT Teacher coordinated the lessons.

Food Donations to Church Homes

On Friday 24 November , Ms Nicolette Scerri and Ms Sonia Steward from Church Homes for the Elderly, visited our school to explain more about their work and how the food donations collected by our students help them more in their mission towards making a better life for the elderly in Casa Leone.
