St Gerald’s student leaders contribute to community
At the beginning of Transition Year, students at St Gerald’s College embarked on a meaningful journey by joining the Lasallian Youth Leadership Team. This initiative fosters leadership skills and emphasises the importance of community service through involvement in the John Paul II Initiative and the Young St Vincent de Paul.
One of the standout experiences was the collaboration with Helen Ralph, the Young St Vincent de Paul schools’ co-ordinator. Through her guidance, students had the opportunity to volunteer at a local Women’s Refuge, where they were tasked with creating and painting a vibrant mural. This project was not just about aesthetics; it aimed to bring the residents a sense of joy and calm, demonstrating the power of art in healing and community building.
The students expressed gratitude for the opportunity to contribute positively to their local community, highlighting the valuable lessons learned throughout the process. This hands-on experience helped them understand the significance of empathy and the impact of their efforts on those in need.
Thanks to the dedication of Ms. Loftus, Helen, and the St Vincent de Paul team, the students were able to engage in a project that not only beautified the refuge but also enriched their own lives. This initiative exemplifies the core values of the Lasallian ethos, encouraging young leaders to take active roles in fostering kindness and support in their communities.
Memorable visit from special guests
St. Gerald’s DLS College welcomed Br. Tom from DLS Waterford and Mr. Pat Walsh, Director of Formation for the La Salle District, on Thursday, 13th November. Their visit included a stop at Saint Patrick’s Monastery, where the DLS Brothers lived until 2000.
As part of the visit, the Brothers gifted the parish a picture of St. Jean Baptiste De La Salle for the monastery’s oratory. Fr. Conal blessed the picture, and Fr. John recited a traditional DLS prayer.
The occasion was attended by Sr. Teresa Nolan from the Sisters of Mercy, Mr. Shaun Burke, Principal of St. Gerald’s, and the 5-3 R.E. class with their teacher, Ms. Hiney. Adding to the atmosphere, students Cian Mongan, William Hoban, Alex Dunlop, and Tiarnán O’Toole Walsh performed musical pieces.
The visit offered a reflective moment to honour the DLS legacy.
