Publication focuses on the role of Lasallian Women in the Lasallian Family

The District of Ireland, Great Britain & Malta congratulates Heather Ruple Gilson on the publication of her work, MEL Bulletin 61, Lasallian Women: Leaven for the Journey of Association for Mission.

This publication emphasises the significant role of women within the Lasallian Mission, noting that, according to the official statistics of the Institute, 60% of Lasallian Partners today are women. This focus aims to deepen the understanding of women as key protagonists and agents of leaven in the mission and Association of the Lasallian Family. Their commitment, communal leadership style, and vocational identity are vital for the sustainability and growth of the mission.

While highlighting the contributions of women, the Bulletin acknowledges the essential roles of lay men and the Brothers, reinforcing that the focus on women does not diminish their contributions. It addresses potential dismissals of this focus due to cultural biases and underscores the universality of women's experiences across the Institute's regions.

The document also responds to calls from the Church to enhance representation, eliminate gender bias, and promote women's roles. It advocates for a comprehensive reflection on women's contributions within the broader context of the Lasallian Family, viewing it as part of a diverse “kaleidoscope of experiences”.

To facilitate this understanding, three foundational papers are referenced:

·         Lasallian Women’s Needs Assessment Survey Report (Heather Ruple Gilson, MEd; Susan R. Hines, EdD; Elizabeth E. Seebach, PhD; and Mary Catherine Fox, AFSC, PhD, 2022);

·         Lasallian Women: Pathways on the Vocational Journey (Heather Ruple Gilson MEd, 2019);

·         The Lived Experience of First-Generation International Lasallian Women Leaders (Susan R. Hines, EdD, 2018).

The Bulletin outlines the key roles women have played since the Institute's inception, highlights significant findings from the XVI Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops, discusses commitments of the Global Compact on Education concerning women and girls, and reflects on how Institute publications have evolved regarding the contributions of women to Mission, Association, and the Lasallian Family.

Congratulations once again to Heather for her outstanding contributions and leadership within our District and the wider Lasallian Family. Her work exemplifies the spirit of collaboration and commitment that lies at the heart of our mission, paving the way for a brighter future for all involved in the Lasallian vocation.
