Looking after the environment at St Declan’s

On Thursday October 26th, we at St Declan’s NS had the great pleasure of welcoming Mayor Cllr. Jody Power to our school for the Annual Mayor’s Visit. This is always a special occasion in the St Declan’s Calendar.

The Mayor was greeted in our traditional manner by the Beaver/Cub/Scout Guard of Honour and  were accompanied by a piper from the De La Salle Scout Band.

Over the last few weeks, we as a school community have been working hard to raise awareness around the topic of waste and litter. We have had a specific focus on Reducing, Reusing and Recycling.

We ran a whole-wide recycling competition. Younger classes completed a colouring competition, while the older classes designed posters or wrote poems based on the theme of recycling. With over 400 entries and such a high standard, it was very difficult to pick just one winner from each class.

The Mayor kindly presented certificates to these winners yesterday along with a goodie bag.

The goodie bags were filled with items donated from Waterford City and County Council. There were lots of recycled and reusable items included, so they were indeed very appropriate. Needless to say the goodie bags were a huge hit!
