Jersey students complete Island Walk for charity
On Wednesday 6th April over 400 boys from De La Salle Jersey took part in the College’s Island Walk. The Island Walk is an annual charity fundraising event founded in 1960. Due to the challenges of COVID, this was the first opportunity for us to stage the event since 2019.
Starting near town on the south coast, each participant aimed to complete the 36-mile course around Jersey’s coastal roads, ending at Liberation Square. The event is recognised for raising as much money for charities and school trips as possible.
In previous years the school has managed to raise around £20,000 each time. A significant proportion of all funds will be donated to charities chosen by the College’s Student Council.
In 2022, the two charities chosen by the student body are Silkteen (a residential therapeutic programme available to young people aged between 13 and 18) and Youthful Minds (a group of individuals aged between 11 and 25 who volunteer for Mind Jersey to raise awareness of Mental Health issues and support available for young people). Both of these charities were chosen to advocate for Article 24 of the UNCRC as part of our ongoing development as a UNICEF Rights Respecting School.
Any boy who finished under plaque time of 10 hours 15 minutes received a personally engraved plaque in recognition of the achievement. Medals were also provided for those who complete 12 miles (bronze), 24 miles (silver) and 36 miles (gold). The actual course is just over 37 miles in length!
The Island Walk record was achieved this year by Luc Langlois who was in Year 13 and who completed in a time of 4 hours and 27 minutes. This beat the previous ‘best time’ set by Ian Carter in the later 1990s of 4 hours and 30 minutes.
