Invitation to take part in Lasallian Projects
Following the disruptions caused by the Covid pandemic, Br. John Deeney is pleased to reveal that the Lasallian Projects will be travelling to Africa this summer and he is inviting anyone interested to get in touch.
Lasallian Projects are sponsoring a school building in Kenya over July/August in summer 2023. Since we are not able to send a youth group we decided that it would be a good opportunity to offer the experience to ‘working’ people. The presumption is that these people would go for 1,2, 3 weeks but probably not longer than that since the school holidays are limited.
The door is open for different people also to travel at different times and from different places, though there is more benefit in being there within a small group context. There would be the opportunity to work on the building alongside the local builders as our young groups have done over decades. There would also be some exposure to the local educational scene; any participation in classes, if desired, would have to be set up in situ. The town is near the Masai Mara, famous area but challenging for most of the people who live there.
We have worked with the parish priest over a good number of years and he would be reliable in making sure that the project functioned well and that visitors were well looked after. We believe that people arranging their own travel and insurance might be the simplest and most flexible way of setting this up. (If we were to end up with a group of 10 all travelling together, then going for a group ticket and fare would be worth thinking about.)
The flight(s) would be to Nairobi and the pp would arrange onward travel by road, some distance, maybe 5 hours but on surfaced roads.
A look at the back copies of Developing Times on the website, lasallianprojects.org.uk, you will find some years when groups were in the Maasai area at Narosura (or Narok) and quite often with Fr. Ambrose. E.g. 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015.
Anyone who is interested in following this up should contact Br John directly or through the LP website.
