Events at Stella Maris reflect Lasallian Values

Students at Stella Maris Junior School in Malta have taken part in diverse and interesting activities that reflect the strong Lasallian Values in the school.

Daily Living Skills Club

The Daily Living Skills Club is a programme organised during break time, aimed to integrate students with special needs and mainstream students.  Eight sessions including cooking, gardening, shopping skills and Lego building.  Communication activities are included during each session to help the students integrate, such as playing telephone.  The students are enjoying the sessions and look forward to the next one.

Fun Games Club

Another club run during breaktime is the Fun Games Club.  Students enjoy themselves in good company and safe environment.  Different games are organised during each session.  This club offers structured play for students who wish to play in a more calmer environment.

Football League for Grade 5/6 Students

After an absence of two years, the Grade 5/6 Football League is being organised once again.  Matches are organised during breaktime and are well supported by the rest of the students.

Safeguarding Training for Members of Staff

Mr Andrew Azzopardi, Head of Safeguarding, Safeguarding Commission together with Ms Carly Zarb (Social Worker) delivered a one-day training course in Child Safety to all Junior School members of staff.  They helped the staff to examine cases and think of actions that need to be in place for the safety of everyone.

Sustainable Development Session by Mr Bernard Grixti - EkoSkola Teacher

Nature Trust (Malta) - Directorate for Educational Services - was invited to facilitate an interesting discussion about Sustainable Development Goals with all the students.  Mr Bernard facilitated the discussions by challenging their thinking skills and moving away from the self and concentrating more on sustainable balance.

Dinja Wahda Award Ceremony

Stella Maris Junior College was awarded Gold Prize once more during the Dinja Wahda Award Ceremony. Dinja Waħda Primary is an environmental education programme, run in collaboration with the Education Directorate, for children aged 4-11.  Dinja Waħda taps into young people’s innate fascination with nature and seeks to develop it into a sense of responsibility towards the natural world. Through engaging environmental education activities, children are made aware of human impact on the environment and works to develop values that lead to sustainable behaviour.  Jamie Brincat from Grade 3 Arnold together with his class teacher represented Stella Maris during the ceremony.

Grade 6 Idioms Competition

The first two rounds of the annual Grade 6 idioms competition have been done and dusted. The photos show the winners of Round 1, and the winners of Round 2. The third and final round between the nine finalists will be held in two weeks' time. Everyone is a winner, because most of the boys have started using the idioms in their speech and writing. Well done, and keep it up!

Celebrating World Children’s Day and Wearing Orange to raise awareness about bullying

As a college, we celebrate World Children’s Day by helping the students understand that every child in the world has a right to live in a safe environment, be it at school, at home or any other place.  The United Nations has designated every November 20 as Universal Children’s Day. It’s a time to promote togetherness around the world, awareness of the problems children face in every corner of the globe, and improve the welfare for all children.

During the week, 14th – 18th November, Anti Bullying Week takes place all around the world.  Bullying affects lives.  Grade 5 Benjamin prepared an assembly called Celebrating Diversity to help us reflect - We are different but unique.

The school was invited by the Anti Bullying Team within SFCE to ask students and staff to participate and wear something orange, be it a T-shirt, a cap, pair of socks or a scarf.

The students enjoyed playing games during break time, Grade 3 Benjamin students prepared some fresh orange juice while Grade 3 Arnold students prepared their own lunch, played bingo, and blew bubbles.  Grade 5 Benjamin enjoyed a treat in class while they watched their favourite movie.  Other classes organised in class activities.

Dutch Students on Erasmus Exchange

Three Dutch students are doing their placement in our school.  As part of their studies they planned and prepared a two hour programme for the Grade 4 students.  The students had the opportunity to participate in some typical games played in the Netherlands. They also learnt some words in Dutch whilst using different visuals and participate in various group games.
