Churchtown students enjoy a journey through history

The 6th Year History students of De La Salle College Churchtown embarked on an unforgettable journey through history during their recent History Trip. This educational adventure took them to Dundrum Library and a nostalgic 1950s-style diner, Eddie Rockets, offering them a unique blend of lifelong learning and a taste of the past.

The expedition began at Dundrum Library, where the students became official library members. Fulfilling one of the fundamental goals of De La Salle College, this experience underscored the importance of lifelong learning and the enduring value of libraries.

Guiding them through this place of knowledge was the library's very own historian, Thomas Earl Fitzgerald, a published author renowned for his historical expertise. Mr. Fitzgerald led the students through the library's history section, introducing them to an array of books on offer. Alongside this, he explained the intricacies of the library's referencing system, empowering the students to navigate the world of academia with ease.

The journey continued as the students delved into the digital realm. Mr. Fitzgerald demonstrated how to access the Irish newspaper archives, offering a glimpse into historical events through the lens of the press. Moreover, the students were introduced to JStor, an academic journal site, unlocking a wealth of scholarly resources that would aid them in their academic pursuits.

The library tour concluded in the dedicated study area, where students were encouraged to immerse themselves in their studies, embracing the commitment to learning that De La Salle College instils in its students.

But the historical immersion didn't end there. The students made their way to Eddie Rockets, a diner that transported them back to the 1950s. Here, they recreated a Sit-In style protest, mirroring the civil rights activism of the era—a poignant reflection of their current classroom studies.

To round off this enlightening day, the students were treated to one of Eddie Rockets' world-famous milkshakes, adding a sweet touch to their journey through history.

The 6th History Trip to Dundrum Library and Eddie Rockets was a resounding success, blending the values of lifelong learning with an immersive historical experience. The students returned to De La Salle College with a deeper appreciation for history and a renewed commitment to their academic pursuits.
